7 Smart Home Electrical Upgrades That Are Actually Worth the Investment

The smart home market is flooded with gadgets, and it can be hard to separate the genuinely useful upgrades from the gimmicks. As a residential electrician who's installed smart home systems in dozens of Iowa City homes, I've seen what homeowners actually use daily versus what ends up collecting dust.

Here are seven smart home electrical upgrades that consistently deliver real value — the ones our customers in Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty tell us were worth every penny.

1. Smart Light Switches (Not Just Smart Bulbs)

Smart bulbs are fine for a lamp or two, but if you want whole-home smart lighting, smart switches are the way to go. Here's why: they work with any bulb, they don't lose their "smarts" when someone flips the physical switch, and they're more cost-effective when you're controlling multiple bulbs on one circuit.

We recommend Lutron Caseta or Leviton Decora Smart switches for most Iowa City homeowners. They're reliable, they work with every major smart home platform, and they look clean on the wall. Installation requires a neutral wire in the switch box — most homes built after the 1980s have this, but many older Iowa City homes don't. A licensed electrician can add neutral wires during installation if needed.

2. Whole-Home Wi-Fi Infrastructure

Smart home devices are only as good as your Wi-Fi network. If you're experiencing dead zones or slow connections, consider having structured Ethernet cabling installed throughout your home. This allows you to place Wi-Fi access points in optimal locations for complete coverage.

This is especially valuable in larger Iowa City homes and in homes with plaster walls or metal ductwork that interfere with wireless signals. We can run Cat6 Ethernet cable to key locations during a remodel, or retrofit it in finished homes with minimal disruption.

3. USB Outlet Receptacles

This is one of the simplest and most appreciated upgrades we do. Replacing standard outlets with USB-A and USB-C combo receptacles in key locations — bedside tables, kitchen counters, home office desks — eliminates the need for bulky charging adapters.

Modern USB outlet receptacles deliver fast charging speeds and look clean. At around $25 per outlet plus installation, this is one of the most affordable smart home upgrades available.

4. Smart Thermostat Pre-Wiring

If your home doesn't already have a smart thermostat, the wiring upgrade is straightforward and the energy savings are real. Smart thermostats like the Ecobee or Google Nest learn your schedule and adjust heating and cooling automatically. Most homeowners see a 10-15% reduction in HVAC energy costs.

The key requirement is a "C-wire" (common wire) at your thermostat location. Many older Iowa City homes only have four thermostat wires, but a smart thermostat needs five. We can run the additional wire quickly and affordably.

5. Outdoor Smart Lighting and Security

Motion-activated smart outdoor lighting serves double duty: it improves your home's security and adds convenience. We install smart floodlights, pathway lights, and porch lights that can be controlled from your phone, set on schedules, or triggered by motion.

For Iowa City homeowners, this is particularly valuable during the short winter days when you're leaving for and returning from work in the dark. Having your exterior lights automatically adjust to sunset times and respond to motion provides both safety and peace of mind.

6. Dedicated Home Office Circuits

The shift to remote and hybrid work is here to stay, and many Iowa City homeowners have discovered that their home office setup is straining a shared bedroom circuit. A dedicated 20-amp circuit for your home office ensures your computer, monitors, printer, and other equipment have clean, reliable power.

We can also add additional outlets, USB receptacles, and Ethernet connections to create a truly professional home office setup. This is one of the most requested upgrades we've done since 2020.

7. Whole-Home Surge Protection

A whole-home surge protector installs at your electrical panel and protects every device in your house from power surges. This is different from the power strips you plug into the wall — it protects your HVAC system, refrigerator, washer, dryer, and all the other appliances you can't plug into a surge strip.

In Eastern Iowa, where thunderstorms and power fluctuations are common, whole-home surge protection is one of the smartest investments you can make. It typically costs between $300 and $500 installed and can save you thousands in damaged electronics and appliances.

Getting Started with Smart Home Upgrades

The best approach to smart home upgrades is to start with the basics — good Wi-Fi infrastructure, smart switches in your most-used rooms, and whole-home surge protection — and build from there. At Down The Road Electric Inc, we can help you plan a phased approach that fits your budget and priorities.
